AI disclosure

All my game assets are 100% handmade.

You wouldn't steal a handbag

Did you know that not one of the large companies who built LLMs asked permission for any of the work they trained their models with? This means they literally stole all the source material that they now create remixes of and sell to you at a premium. A pretty classic case of copyright infringement and they're only getting away with it because it's so hard to sue them.

As a developer I'm responsible for not breaking the law myself, so there's no way I could use AI art in my works even if I wanted to. The licensing is just too shady.

Just throw more electricity at it

LLMs just might be the most inefficient computer program in the history of software. The AIs of today are not smart nor do they have even the simplest understanding of the tasks they are used for. This inevitably leads to a very high failure rate that the models mitigate with a simple brute force approach - just try again and again and again until you get a result that can be shown to the user. The energy consumption is so high that the providers are struggling to turn a profit, less recoup their huge investments. Artificial intelligence? More like artificial stupidity.

Imitation is a kind of artless flattery

A thought from 1714 that still holds true today. To me AI art simply looks soulless. LLMs work using propabilities and that produces results that are by definition average. Fortunately people are not like that and even bad art has personality.

My stance on AI coding tools

While I don't currently utilize AI when developing my games, I don't think LLMs are that big of an issue when used as a progamming assist. We programmers usually sell a whole product and not just single algorithms, so using AI for chores is not money away from anyone. There's also tons of public domain code out there and most hosting services include AI access in the terms of service, making code much less likely to be illicitly used. That said, I think the models still suck at coding, so I'm probably not going to use them extensively anytime soon.
